Q. What is the best time to visit Yamunotri and Gangotri?
The ideal time for the Yamunotri-Gangotri Yatra is from May to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the temples remain open for pilgrims. The monsoon season (July-August) brings heavy rainfall, making travel difficult, while winters (November-April) see heavy snowfall, closing the temples.
Q. How difficult is the trek to Yamunotri?
The trek to Yamunotri Temple is about 6 km from Janki Chatti and is of moderate difficulty. It takes around 3-4 hours to reach the temple. Ponies, palanquins (palkis), and dolis are available for those who may need assistance. The trek is scenic, passing through forests, streams, and steep ascents.
Q. Is there any trekking involved in reaching Gangotri?
No, Gangotri Temple is easily accessible by road. However, if you wish to visit Gaumukh Glacier, the source of the Ganges, you need to undertake an 18 km trek from Gangotri. This trek requires good physical fitness and prior permissions from the forest department.

Accommodation is available in Barkot (near Yamunotri) and Uttarkashi (near Gangotri). Options include budget hotels, guesthouses, and ashrams.
